Comfortable atmosphere puts patient at ease during colonoscopy procedure

David was due for his colonoscopy screening. His general practitioner referred him to Dr. Nasser Alqassam, a board-certified internal medicine physician for his colonoscopy procedure. David’s screening would take place at Southern New Mexico Surgery Center on an outpatient basis.david success story

    What is a colonoscopy?

A colonoscopy screening allows the doctor to carefully examine the lining of the colon. The colonoscope is a long, flexible tube that is approximately the thickness of a finger. It is inserted through the rectum into the large intestine (colon) and allows the doctor to carefully examine the lining of the colon. Abnormalities of the colon can be seen in great detail. If the physician sees a suspicious area or needs to evaluate an area of inflammation in greater detail, he can pass an instrument through the colonoscope and take a small piece of tissue (biopsy) for examination in the laboratory. Biopsies are taken for many reasons and do not necessarily mean that cancer is suspected.

    Day of Screening at SNMSC

David received instructions from Dr. Alqassam on how to prepare his colon for the screening. He arrived at the surgery center on the morning of his procedure and was greeted by the staff and directed to a procedure room. “The nurses were very friendly and nice, they helped put me at ease before my colonoscopy,” David remembers. He was placed under a light sedative during the procedure which took about 45 minutes. Because of the anesthesia, his son drove him home after the screening. “Southern New Mexico Surgery Center does not have a hospital feeling at all. My wait time was minimal and the surroundings were comfortable. Ideally, this is where I would prefer to go for any type of procedure or surgery,” he says.
